Pride Rally to Earn Div I Sr. Boys Title

The Notre Dame Pride capped off their improbable run through the Senior Boy’s division one playoffs by downing the defending champs Bishop Grandin Ghosts 69-66 on Saturday night at Crescent Heights High School.

The brilliantly played game was a fitting ending to a basketball season that clearly showcased the current strength and status of Calgary high school basketball. The talent level is clearly at an all-time high.

Calling the Pride’s run to the final improbable is fair considering they toppled the run-away No.1 ranked team Bishop O’Byrne Bobcats in the semi-final and then followed it up by beating the talented Ghosts in Saturday’s final. In both games the Pride came in as underdogs but walked away the victors.

But don’t call their journey a Cinderella run. That analogy is used for teams that win games they have no business winning, and it’s usually more reflective of the stronger team’s performance than the play of the underdog team.

In the Pride’s case, they may have earned the title the hard way, but they definitely earned it and nobody is disputing their ability to step up and perform in big games. They also did a lot of stepping up during the regular season that saw them finish with a 9-1 record. Their only blemish was a one-point loss to the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs earlier this season.
