Normally, all-star games make basketball traditionalists cringe in their seats

Girls Select GameBut whoever said all-star games typically lack intensity, fundamentals and defense would have been in for a treat earlier this week when Calgary’s top female high school players took to the hard court in the 2010 version of the Senior Girls Selects Game at Bishop Carroll High School.

The game featured the top player from each school competing against each other in a HomeSpolumbos-Deli-logo versus Away format.

Contrary to the typical all-star game, this game may turn out to be the game of the year.

After trailing by more than 20 points as late as the third quarter, the Visitors put together a furious late-game rally to get themselves to within a point in the final minutes.

But some missed foul shots kept them from squaring the score, and in the end the Home team came away with a narrow 88-87 victory.

St. Francis Browns’ Florence Oloya, a 6’0” post, led the Home team with 17 points and James Fowler Falcons Kendra Larson and Bishop Grandin Ghosts’ Leigh Nielsen chipped in with 12 points each.

The Visitors were led by Crescent Heights Cowboys’ Nyawal Bukjok, who scored a game-high 18 point.

St. Mary’s Saints’ Claire Colborne chipped in with 14 points and William Aberhart Trojans’ Jordhynn Guy scored 12 points, all of which came in the second half.
