The Notre Dame Pride’s perfect season came to a painful end  against the defending provincial champions, the RaymondSpolumbos-Deli-logo Comets.

No matter what, losing the last game of the season always leaves a sour taste, but when the dust on Saturday night’s  37-0 loss in the Tier I Southern Alberta Final the Pride can look back at their season at consider it a huge success.

According to Pride’s head coach Dave Diluzio, the difference maker in the game was the terrific Line play on both sides of the ball by the Comets as well as the basic overall football fundamentals that sometimes gets overlooked in favour of the big play.

To drive that fact home, the Comets laid a supreme 61-0 beating on the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds last week to earn their spot in the regional final against the Pride.

“Their line play was terrific and fundamentally they played extremely well,” said Diluzio.  “They’re a really, really strong football team.”

Diluzio was also impressed by the Comets’ ability to keep the offense moving with short passes.

“I don’t know if they made a single big play,” said Diluzio.  “They just kept on going to the short pass and moving the ball.”

Those short plays were what set the tone on the first drive when the Comets converted on a drive that took over seven minutes off the clock.

The Comets rode their opening touchdown to a 17-0 halftime lead, which was extended to 17-0 by half time.

The Comets now move on to face Edmonton’s Bev Facey Falcons in Edmonton on November 21st, a team they beat 31-7 in last year’s provincial final.

The Falcons defeated the Harry Ainlay Titans 14-7 in the North regional finals to earn their spot in the final.
