Déjà vu – Browns Defeat Warriors

In life there are certain things that always remain the same.
The sun rises every morning and sets in the evening. Calgary will hate Edmonton, and Edmonton will hate Calgary. Everybody outside of New England will boo the Patriots and the New York Knicks will again be favorites to win the NBA champtionship.
Ok, so that last one is wishful thinking for a Knicks fan, but one can dream can’t they?
But most predictable of all as far as Calgary is concerned is that the St. Francis Browns (2-0) will field one heck of a football team.
It’s a tradition.
So far this season the Browns have lived up to expectations.
After shutting out the St. Mary’s Saints last Monday, the Browns delivered another stellar performance in this week’s Kram Game of the Week by defeating the Henry Wisewood Warriors (1-1) 21-7.
If not for a last second Warriors touchdown, the Browns could have started the season with two shutouts, and a clear message delivered to the rest of Division 1 that they fully intend to defend their title.
The Browns defeated the Warriors in last season’s city final by a 30-14 score.
This time around the Browns rode three first-half touchdowns all the way to the finish line.
The Browns opened the scoring on a superb 27-yard rumble by running back Steven Lumbala.
Just over two minutes later Lumbala again scored on an eight-yard plunge, thanks in large to his own magnificent kick return deep inside the red zone.
Lumbala was quick to acknowledge his teammate’s efforts to provide him with plenty of open space to show off his impressive speed and lateral moves.
“The line was awesome,” said the grade 12 student. “I love the line and they were key in making our game successful.”
Brown’s quarterback Curtis Dell finished off the last of the scoring his team would need by firing an accurate pass to his receiver inside the end zone.
After being spotted 21 points, it was up to the Brown’s defense to play the part of the closer, a challenge they willingly accepted for the remainder of the game.
The fact that Brown’s defense managed to hold a strong Warrior’s offense to just seven points certainly bodes well for the head coach Darren Dudar, considering many of his defensive players are first-year seniors.
“The defense played a great game,” said Dudar. “It’s a very young defense with a lot of grade 11 kids. We were lucky to score on our first possession and I think that certainly set the tone.”
Unfortunately for the Warriors, their starting running back was injured in the opening moments of the game, which put a damper on their dynamic offense.
In the last few years the two teams have developed a fierce rivalry due mostly to the fact that both schools have managed to field strong teams.
It’s a huge rivalry,” said Lumbala. “We’re the two most successful teams in Division 1 in the past eight years.”
But with teams like Notre Dame and Bowness looking strong this season, it’s a toss-up whether the two teams will meet in the finals this year.
Only time will tell.
